We enjoyed a great day at the Zoo on Wednesday! Our Zoo interpreter, Emily, provided a very informative one-hour program on penguins. The students had an opportunity to do five different hands-on activity stations where they could look at and touch bio-facts (a penguin's skull, seal's pelt, penguins feathers...), do a sorting activity about positive and negative human impacts on penguins habitats, and build a penguin habitat. Thank you once again to the parent volunteers who joined us for the day. These field trips would not be possible without you! :)

In Word Work this week, we focused on the "oa" vowel team. Our daily words for Shared Reading were boat, goat, soap, road, and coat.

In Math, the students did a survey to find out everyone's favourite zoo animal. They needed to graph the responses, tally up the data, and answer questions using this data. We continued learning about 3D shapes this week. The students did a hands-on activity to determine whether the shapes roll, slide, and/or can stack. They also got to visit a 3D shape "museum" put on by the kindergarten students! Lastly, we introduced symmetry this week. The students did a fun monster-symmetry art lesson with their Grade 4 buddies. I will include photos next week.

Every day in Math, we do what's called a Math Warm-Up. Here is an example of one we did this week that you may enjoy trying at home. You can choose any number for the target and provide numbers that can be added and/or subtracted to reach the answer.

Thank you to everyone who sent in a baby photo of your child. I am still waiting on a few photos and hope to have them on Monday. If not, I will put together the guessing game with the photos I have and the students will be able to guess each other's identity on Tuesday! :) If you have not yet sent one in, please email me a photo at jllarmer@cbe.ab.ca.

Next Tuesday, we will be participating in a Learning on the Land session with Elder Hal Eagletail. We will walk to the hill near the splash park for our session. It will take place even if there is a light rain so please ensure your child has a rain jacket and appropriate footwear.

Our last library day will be this week.

I hope you all enjoy a great weekend! :)
